I work hard and put all I can into being on top of that. I am proud that I do. It's not easy. The meds don't keep me 100% away from rotten days or lousy thoughts. The terrorist that is my depression doesn't just retire. It still lurks. It fucking keeps me on my toes. The meds they keep me level enough to be alongside everyone else. Even with meds I work hard to make every day stable, every interaction solid. Some days, even with meds I'm a total emotional klutz but I'm not in agony. I'm not wondering why I'm around. For that I'm thankful. Thankful that my brain can benefit from meds. Thankful for a care team that includes a social worker and a psychiatrist. Thankful for the diagnosis that was able to pin point what I thought for so many damn years was a failure of my soul, a damnation of my character. It's my brain - an organ in my body that I have to tend to as carefully as I can. I am thankful for a family and partner that gets it and helps me stay well. There is no shame in being on meds, on taking meds, on needing meds, of wanting meds. There is no shame. ✨ I take meds everyday for my cancer to prevent recurrence why shouldn't I care for my brain and a depression or manic recurrence. They haven’t always been. There were years where I willingly rose to go to a church service with my not so willing family, trained pre-dawn for a half-marathon, worked or studied. Rare to simply sleep in and rest. Just as the seasons of the Year bring changes in routines, the seasons of Life evolve with time. The sweet crispness of this fall season has me courageously facing my future and reflecting on past seasons. Not so I can berate myself for things that could have gone better, but for ways in which I am now stronger, wiser and more steadfast in myself. Part of this journey has been to return to the sense of believing that I am enough. That I don’t have to turn to the approval of others to find my source of power. When I take time for stillness, I find that source. I don’t have to go to a contemplative service, a yoga class, or travel to exotic Bali to find myself. I can be brave enough to rise every morning, do as well as I can, and at the end of the day, find gratitude in what and who I am. Part of this new found bravery has included radical self care. Taking care of myself has been the most courageous adventure I have chosen. The foundational tool of self care is adequate rest. Join me tonight in finding a quiet space wherever you are. Get comfortable with a blanket or pillow under your head, a soft support under your knees, a light eye covering and a blanket covering your body. Take a moment to reflect on a place that brings you joy. What feelings or sensations come into your body? Do you sense peace or well-being or joy? Where in your body do you feel this sensation? Allow yourself to rest here with this calm joy enveloping you for at least 15 minutes. When you’re ready, rise and journal. Write an encouraging affirmation to yourself that you will reflect on throughout the week. Mine: Courage is when I am taking steps to self care.
